SS19: Collaborations by GINGRCO

Stacy of Stacy The Survivor is not only a stylist and fashion consultant but she is also a survivor of Steven’s Johnson Syndrome ! Meeting online, I had reached out to Stacy and found out that she was also a Style Collective member once we started scheduling our date to shoot.

Originally with the plans to shoot at Laudree Paris, on Monday we went outside of the restaurant into the streets of SoHo to capture looks for Lady L Boutique.

Afterwards, we went straight to Spring Studios to continue session where Stacy ended up getting interviewed by Maybelline’s and by All Things Hair ! With this being her first NYFW, I was super excited to listen in on her interviews.

Check out some of our shoot below!

NYFW SS19: DAY 05 by GINGRCO

It’s finally over.

IMG_1152.jpg

I couldn’t sleep at all last night. Well, I actually haven’t been able to sleep at all during this trip. Before I got into the city I had gotten a pretty bad cold that I was battling all the up to Friday night. The hustle and bustle of fashion week and lack of sleep was definitely hitting me everyday while I was out and about. My hotel didn’t come with breakfast, although I thought I planned that better. So logically, instead of going to get breakfast every morning, I chose to sleep in. I wasn’t able to stomach food anyways. I was lucky if I was able to get through the day without getting sick to my stomach after eating anything.

These are the things most people don’t talk about when they do NYFW. Usually everyone just talks about all the shows and parties they are attending. But I find it rare to see people talk about their day to day struggles that they might encounter. For me, ever since undergrad (I blame the college lifestyle) I tend to get sick quickly, and I’ve managed to go long days without really eating a meal as long as i’m able to get a snack in here or there. Working until exhaustion, capturing content wanting to be everywhere at the same time.

During my trip a reporter outside of Spring Studios, had said to me , “You [as a freelancer] learn to just say ‘YES!’ To anything until you’re more so established.” You find yourself developing ‘FOMO’ (fear of missing out), when every industry A- Lister is at an event you declined an invitation to. Spending time you could be resting, now on social media trying to figure out if the event is still even going on, or even if the person who invited you still has your ticket!

For me, I enjoy fashion week. I enjoy staring at clothes all day, touching cloths and fabrics. I like being able to talk to people who are passionate about a field I’m very much so interested in having a career in. But then again, you have to know when to listen to you body. And today was that day for me.

It’s finally Monday and while at home I made the personal goal of attending NYFW this season from Thursday - Tuesday. This was before, the PR Agencies only confirmed me via email and then didn’t send my invites. This was before, the temperature went from hot and Sunny to constant non-stop rain. This was before, I found out that my hotel wasn’t serving breakfast. This was before I got sick. This was before, 2 out of every 5 Lyfts I called cancelled tried me with “no shows” when they weren’t even at my locations. This was before, I got fed up.

Before before before. I guess you could say my social battery was dying, but, the show must go on.

I laid in my bed. It’s 8:44am. I didn’t want to pack up my things but I needed to get the hell out of NYC. I have a shoot today with Stacy (read more here), The Blogger & Brand event at 6pm, and a collective showcase at 9pm.

I find myself power cleaning my hotel room, packing up all of my items, and figuring out what clothes I wanted to wear tonight. I tear off a slice of pizza and call my Lyft. Scrambling to get my things together, I ran out the room to my Lyft forgetting my umbrella.

After the shoot, I decided to head back home. With GPS Radar now showing The Blogger & Brand to be happening at 3pm, although my email from last night had me confirmed for 6pm, I decided to send off my extra tickets and head back home.

The whole trip was extremely exhausting but absolutely worth it. As I headed back home, I start marking my calendar for February, to get ready to do it all over again.

NYFW SS19: CHROMAT Pop Up by GINGRCO

CHROMAT - SS19 Saturation Pop Up

DSC00445.jpg

The small studio space was decorated with swimwear. sweaters and t-shirts. A bartender made drinks for a group who watched the rerun of last night’s show on the TV screen. The runway consisted of the likes of opener Leyna Bloom, Geena Rocero, Carmen Carrera, Mama Cax and many more! Junie by Solange played softly in the background as guests laughed and talked while CHROMAT team members organized product.

I had the chance to speak with Kristi Siedow-Thompson, an intern with CHROMAT. She expressed to me how she always wanted to be in fashion and finally took that chance to do it in 2016 when she moved from Denver, Colorado to New York City to study at FIT.

As the we watched the show on the screen, Siedow-Thompson took the time to explain every look to me, speaking passionately about the SS19 collection. She expressed the challenges that came with the models being completely soaked, and the how exciting runway shows are.

I also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Becca McCharen-Tran, designer of CHROMAT. Our conversation was brief but very informative. McCharen-Tran’s energy was very warm and inviting and it felt as I was just grabbing coffee with one of my dear friends from home.

McCharen-Tran tells me, during the production of the show she didn’t feel any particular emotions, “I was too busy to feel” she says smiling, “I was just like whats next, what’s next, who needs this, who has shoes on.”

When I asked how she felt about doing runways she expressed that she loves all collaboration that is put together to make a show. “I love the fact you can just get in a room with all of these talent people it may be make up hair jewelry designer musicians, then you all kinda combine your specialities into making something unique.”

DSC00462.jpg

McCharen-Tran talks about the show, saying her favorite look was probably the finale with the photo of Dana Scuggs, but expressed how much she loved the duo saying, “They surprised me!” and “They’re so cute!”

Getting into the concept of Saturation, the name of CHROMAT’s SS19 Collection, McCharen-Tran explains how the whole collection was inspired by wet t-shirts. “We wanted to reimagine the whole hiding under a giant t-shirt when you’re going to a pool party because you’re too embarrassed to wear swim in public.” and that , “We wanted to put that moment of vulnerability and make it something to be proud of.”

The body positive brand has been known for celebrating diversity on it’s runway from always being inclusive and casting models of all different shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities and so forth. McCharen-Tran tells me that it wasn’t about fulfilling a need but it had always been her world.

“You know what I first start back in Virginia the models I choose were my friend and my friends just happened to be people of all different sizes races ethnicities heights you know. it’s just always i’m lucky enough to work in a creative community that is inherently diverse establish now that we are in New York like the artists and the people that inspire us they come from everywhere and so it reflects our community.”

With it just being the brands normality McCharen-Tran mentions how having a not fashion background, receiving a degree in Architecture Design from University of Virginia School of Architecture, helped her define her own rules her to not feel the need to prescribe to traditions.

“I want the audience to feel excited, I want them to feel seen, celebrated and feel apart of it.” McCharen-Tran speaks on how one’s designs can be a reflection of their communities. “It does make me question who their community is, who their surrounded by, what their lifestyle is. I think it reflects all of that. If you grow up in a white world surrounded by only white people if you grow up in some kind of segregated or excluded area kinda whites only space then that’s what it’s gonna look like.”

Before going our separate ways I was able to thank the designer for her resilience to stand firm in her beliefs. One can only hope the rest of fashion industry will start to take notes.

NYFW SS19: DAY 04 by GINGRCO

NYFW DAY 04

I wanted to go to church today but, slept through the early service and wasn’t going to be able to attend the whole service of the 10:30 service without running behind schedule. So I did my usual morning prayers and played my “Praise & Worship” playlist on SoundCloud as I got ready for my day.

Today was probably the more organized not altered day. The entire week I hadn’t received any of my show tickets from The Riviere Agency so instead of attending the NONIE show as originally planned, I spent the morning sorting photos of my flash drive, working on the edits of my Costello review, and getting mentally ready for the day.

Pool Rules at the Chromat Pop Up

Pool Rules at the Chromat Pop Up

First on the list for today, was JUN JIE Presentation at Pier 59 Studios, and can I say I wish I got there earlier. The presentation was from 12-2 and I arrived late in my Lyft at 1:44pm struggling to get to the studio room before the doors close. After JUN JIE was the Chromat Pop Up, before heading back towards Time Square to The Row for Fashion Mingle’s Networking Party.

Typically during fashion week, I travel with Lyft. I prefer the drivers over uber because they (in my own personal opinion) take their time to make sure I get from point A to point B smoothly. My Lyft driver today smiled as I ran out of the Chromat Pop Up trying to dodge the rain to get to him.

“Hi!” he greeted me as I got in the car.

“Hello,” I greeted back.

“Make any money today?!” He smiled as I buckled my seat.

“Um, yes but not really. I guess you could say I’m currently investing in my future.” I laughed as I felt more settled in the Toyota Camry.

He began to grin. “I just get so excited when I see African Americans working for what they work and going after their dreams.” I listened, not really knowing where he was going with this conversation but I had about 25 minutes to kill so I figured I wouldn’t put in my headphones just yet.

“Yeah?” I said.

My driver went on to explain to me, how when he was growing up, his African-American friends weren’t granted scholars or even the same teaching opportunities in schools as the rest of his non-POC friend groups. He began to become so passionate about how excited he is when he hears of African-Americans being able to receive educations.

Before leaving he told me, “Do what you’re doing believing that you’re going to get to the stuff that you want.”

The conversation was beyond uplifting, and I felt a little bit better about how exhausted my body was feeling. “You’re making money don’t worry!” I heard the driver say in my head, as I stepped back out into the rain and headed into The Row.

Having the opportunity to partner with Fashion Mingle has been something so dear to me. With Melissa & Beth taking a chance on me to help out with their first launch party last September (during my very first NYFW), it always feels like home when i’m back with my Mingle Family. From then to now, the Fashion Mingle group has grown tremendously, and I was no longer needed on door duty. This season I had the opportunity to float around and supervise our interns. One of which, somehow managed to get me into doing the speed networking activity with the Mingle Mentors.

Although I am not against networking, I really didn’t understand too much of what I would be doing but I give a go anyways. Quickly I realized I was suppose to be pitching myself rather than quickly listening to each mentor speak. I enjoyed picking at their brains, it was nice to listen to each them passionately talk about their businesses. From fashion lawyers, to PR Agencies, to even a local illustrator; I smiled and laughed as I eagerly engaged with everyone.

The night seemed to go by pretty quickly, and Jasmine & Pat ended up stopping by. We went through our swag bags and talked amongst the crowd of influencers. One boy telling us about how he snuck into the Ralph Lauren Show and managed to sit front row. We laughed and giggled the rest of the night.

I had misplaced my umbrella and ended up splitting up from Jasmine & Pat to go find out, with the intention of meeting back up with them at The Blonde for Shek Wes’s birthday party. But instead, after heading to the wrong location and just being extremely exhausted, I headed back to my hotel and went to sleep.

NYFW SS19: Conversation Pieces x Kristopher Kites by GINGRCO

12 Pell Street - Chinatown

We arrived in Chinatown hopping out of our Lyft, I followed behind Dani, Jasmine and Jhordyn into 12 Pell. “LOVE YOURSELF LIKE KANYE LOVES KANYE #GO12PELL” hung brightly light in a sign at the building’s entrance.

12 Pell is a relevantly new barber shop in Chinatown that sells sneakers and clothing in the front of the store while the barbers are set up closer to the back of the store.

People hung out in the narrow doorway as we pressed our way into the space. Eager to see who this Kristopher Kites was and what his “Conversation Pieces” Pop Up was really about.

We were quickly greeted by a Kites’s sister Ameerah who hugged us and thanked us for coming. Walking us around the small shop, she explained the pieces to us while Kites talked with costumers. From The Power Puff Girls, to Marvel Universe character Venom, we looked at the necklaces that lined the shelves. The space was clean and brightly lit, making very easy to appreciate the designs. Shaun, cousin of Kites & Ameerah, stood behind Dani in the mirror as he adjusted the clear plastic chain links that now lined her neck. Jasmine and I sat down while Jhordyn also waited to get fitted.

DSC02436.jpg

Kites stands tall with his hair braided back, the ends finished with clear beads. Dressed in a white long sleeved shirt that reads “[INSERT CHAIN HERE]” on the front and “KRISTOPHER KITES DID THE CHAIN” on the back. A large Venom action figure half submerged in a clear block hangs around his neck. Kites is very approachable, greeting every one of the costumers that comes through the doors. Asking them each their name, Kites encourages everyone to talk to him before they leave.

I had the opportunity to talk with Kites and learn more about the designer.

“I fake make clothes and I fake make jewelry.” he tells me. Coming from the south side of Chicago, the designer is here for his first NYFW and further explains that, he is a designer of all sorts and doesn’t want people to limit him into just one thing. “A lot of my designs in fashion and jewelry, something orthodox, I’ve turn it up on it’s side. So, I say I fake make it because it’s not the traditional way that jewelry is made.”

When asked about his studio space, Kites tells me, “I have a fake studio.” Laughing, he went on to explain that he is very careful with the process of making the chains now. “I have a lot of gear to make sure I can preserve my safety.”

Already picked up by VOGUE, the designer has only been making chains for 40 days in which he has already sold over 200 pieces. But Kites says there is no secret to his success. “I did a five day gallery at Congruent Space back in Chicago.” Kites describes Congruent Space as being a magnificent retail and environmental space. “On the third day VOGUE did an article on it and after VOGUE, it really got jumping.” (read VOGUE article here).

Kites isn’t afraid to go against the norms saying, “a lot of people just seclude themselves to the norm or what everyone else is thinking. I don’t really go with it, I just think for myself.” Kites goes on to say that, he wanted to show people all the creatives stand points he could touch as a designer, stating the more he did the chains, the more he realized how great of a design it was.

Owning over 600 of comic books, Kites is now bringing his childhood to life. “No one could geek me out of that because that’s what made me happy.” he says.

When asked what his favorite chain was Kites lifted up the Venom chain around his neck. “Venom or The Big Joker this is conversation piece.” He pointed to the top shelve where ‘The Big Joker’ chain was being displayed to show everyone who had gathered around while he and I were talking. “This is the heart of what I've been making. This, [venom], is the first one I actually dyed and changed the color of. Just the whole detail of venom is just crazy.”

As we spoke Euroz walked up to the group dapping up Kites. Wearing the ‘Daredevil’ chain he tells Kites, he bought it online and had to come out to support as soon as he heard about the pop up.

“I’m just really enjoying the pop ups. I get to talk to people.” Kites tells me that during his last online drop, he sold 60 chains in 20 minutes. “That’s cool and fun but I don’t get the interaction I want with people.” Kites further explained the importance of talking to his costumers and being able to reach them. Saying that many might want a chain that may not be available online but they can come get them at the pop up.

Although the chains have already quadrupled in valued, Kite says even though he could price them higher, he prices them low because he wants everyone to have one. Briefly touching on the fact that some jewelry doesn’t appreciate over time, Kites said wants his costumers to not only enjoy their chains but to be able to see the investment in actual art.

When asked about doing collaborative work, Kites stressed that he only wants to work with people if it is something organic. “I’ve even held back from a lot of collaboration because I wanted them to be organic.”

“Where do you see yourself in the next forty days?” I asked him.

Kites replies, “If you only knew what I knew, then you’d know that the next 40 days would be amazing.” Kites disclosures to all standing around that he has major collaborations on the way that he is very excited for us to see. But we will just have to be on the look out.

I regrouped with Dani, Jasmine and Jhordyn. Dani had purchased a ‘Salior Moon’ chain while Jhordyn had purchased the ‘Blossom’ chain from the Power Puff Girls collection. After hugging everyone and making plans to later on connect, we ventured off into the streets of Chinatown to take photos.

MENYELEK - THE LACK OF SEX APPEAL

All Photos Taken By: Sanglui Azang-Njaah

It was a cool day in East Village when I arrived at the garden. Leaving my Lyft, I approached a small line that began to form outside of the gates.

“Hi, I’m here as media for the show.” I told gate keeper who smiled at me and let me pass as he continued to talk with the other attendees in line.

I looked around the garden as I walked towards a pavilion stood that in the middle. The plants grew freely and the trees provided ample shade. It was a very calming environment compared to the regular locations of fashions shows during NYFW. I turned to see Jasmine walking towards me from the pavilion. I smiled, walking quickly to embrace her.

It’s something about seeing a familiar faces while you’re traveling that is always comforting. But today wasn’t just a regular day, today was a celebration. We linked arms and walked around the garden catching up. Today was her first NYFW show, and I was not only able to support with my attendance but, I also working the show as media.

“He’s really laid back.” Jasmine said telling me about Menyelek Rose, designer of MENYELEK.

Originally from Baltimore, Rose now designs in New York City. The 21 year old designer has become well known amongst his peers with features on VOGUE and is affiliated with VFILES. I was interested in seeing what Rose had envisioned when creating his garments with a lack of sex appeal.

After talking music and aspirations with photographer Drew, and his friends Zuri & Seni, and saying hi to Rose’s DJ Styles, I headed back to the models changing area.

The models had gathered in the back area of the garden, secluded off by a wooden door. Happy and seeming very comfortable with the environment, they talked amongst themselves.

Some were dressed in multi-colored long sleeved asymmetrical dresses that were patterned with paisley prints.  These models soon had their right hands covered with a white and purple gardening glove that read “MENYELEK” in orange letters across the front, and held “Ghana must go” bags. Others wore tweed pink and oranger pastel blazers that had lose strings stitched on the sleeves with strips of tule randomly patched onto the blazer’s fronts. Some sported bright colored skin tight body suits with the brand name “MENYELEK” printed across the chest underneath layers of tule with ripped tights; while others simply sported only full layers tule and ripped tights. As for shoes it was very come as you are. Some of the models wearing the prototype MENYELEK slides, as others rocked converses and vans, biker boots, platform boots, and even flip flops.

Eagerly taking photos with the photographers who came in and out of the space, the models posed against the ivy covered concrete walls. Some danced around making their tule garments float like clouds. Afros were fluffed and loose curls frizzed as the girls helped each other with make up while they patiently waited to emerge to the audience.

Rose came to the back, quickly moving as he walked through and checked the final looks of the models. Hugging many and smiling he tells them, “This is it, you’re going to do great.”

Grabbing the shoots I needed, I returned to the main area. The energy was high as Styles worked his magic. Dozens of young creatives and fans flooded the garden. Dressed to impress in the trendiest of street style, many come with smiles, laughing and taking photos with their friends.

Australian photographer, Georgina Solomon, and I talked briefly about our loves for fashion as she expressed to me how she was eager to see Rose’s latest collection. We snapped some photos of one another before I was lead by another photographer to see the walk thru that the models would be doing.

Now knowing the models path, I stood by a garden shed readying myself. The talkative crowd quickly quieted as the words “thunder, thunder cats.” blasted out of the speakers.

One by one, the models come out into the garden and began to channel a lack of sex appeal. They quickly they walked with heavy footing, scrunched faces and eyes looking uninspired. Many of them looking angry. The models continued to walk through the garden before heading to the back area.

As the last model made her walk through, the crowd began to cheer. Rose emerged from the back area behind all of his models as they began to line up in front of the cheering audience. Friends screamed jumping up and down, as he embraced many with hugs. The atmosphere quickly switched into a party. Guests got up to dance in front of the pavilion, while the models stood individually in the midst garden for their outfit photos by the media in attendance.

I had a chance to speak with Rose after the show and to congratulate him on his work. Rose stated his goal of the show was, “basically the restarting of the life of which sex appeal was and just rebranding it and giving it a new name.” And that when he said “lack of sex of appeal,” he basically meant “the beginning of sex appeal.”

“I tried to use tule in a very flaunting way a very colorful way, I tried to have thighs out flashes of ass.” he told me. The tule garments were my favorite look out of the collection.

As for what’s next Rose plans on doing another showcase in November titled ‘The Big Messy Cunty Dutty Show’ with plus sized models. Although the location still to be determined be sure to follow MENYELK on instagram for all brand updates!

NYFW SS19: DAY 03 by GINGRCO

NYFW DAY 03

I had one an half meals today. That’s better than yesterday.

It’s finally Saturday, the busiest day on my schedule. I checked into my hotel around 11:30am, threw my things on the floor and got changed and ran to my Lyft to arrive to the Menyelek show.

On the schedule for today I have a KUHO Presentation at 11:30am, backstage work at MENYELEK at 12pm with the show starting at 1pm, StyleCon at 2:15pm, and Oxford Fashion Studio Show at 4pm. Needless to see my entire schedule was flipped upside down before I even got to into Manhattan. Realizing the time conflicts I gave up my KUHO & Oxford tickets to some other friends who I knew could attend, and headed to the Menyelek show.

#OOTD:

Today I wore a bright red Tommy Hilfiger bodysuit under a blue and red windbreaker, paired with a red vinyl mini skirt. White socks with a blue checker ban along the top, all white special field Air Force 1s. Clear frames, letter necklace and gold earrings from yesterday, with my snakeskin backpack, and small hand-stitched Cameroon heart flag pouch.

On me I carried the Sony A7riii, my 50M F/1.8 and the G Master 70-200M F/4 lenses.

Jasmine was walking so I was extremely excited about being able to not only support my friend but to work backstage as a photographer! After the show Jasmine and I ended up running into more friends from home. Our group of two expanding to a group of nine as we walked the streets of NoHo with hungry stomachs trying to reach San Marzano - Pasta Fresca.

My one meal here could probably count as two. I ordered two servings of garlic bread, a house salad and crafted my own spaghetti with meatballs and mushrooms, a glass of water and of course a glass of orange juice. Bitting off more than I could chew, I sat content as our group happily laughed and ate. San Marzano was very affordable with everyone’s (excluding my own since I was beyond hungry) checks coming up to $12 for a more than filling plate of pasta. The ambience is very warm and calm, with the building walls opened to allow outdoor seating seamlessly blend with the indoor dinning areas.

IMG_0970 2.jpg

Our table began to burst with energy as we all ate. A girl stopping by telling us, “Excuse me, but I wanted to let you know, you’re table is a mood.” we all laughed and thanked her. But she was most definitely right. Our table was full of young creatives, just talking designs, business and sharing uplifting ideas.

I sat at the head at furthest from the door, with Jasmine on my right and Jhordyn on my left. Jasmine being both a model and photographer, Jhordyn a model. Next Jhordyn sat Danni who also models. Next to Danni sat Gloria & Tani, our friends visiting from Toronto. Gloria a photographer, Tani a designer and model. Across from Tani sat Rod, a jeweler and clothing designer. To his left sat Pat & Jasmine both from Arkansas. Pat being a musician and model, Jasmine a being an artist and model. And of course the Jasmines were sitting next to each other!

Smiling at her comment, I continued to eat as much of my food as possible, determined not to waste a bite.

After paying our group of nine dwindled down to four. Me, Danni, Jasmine and Jhordyn. It was about 5:30pm now and we figured since we were already out, with an off thrown schedule to find something to do. We ended up leaving San Marzano and heading over to Chinatown to attend a pop up Drew had told us about (read more here).

By the time we got to Chinatown the pop up was packed. “Conversation Pieces” by Kristopher Kites was the name of the Pop-Up and we spent about an hour and a half with hanging out with Kristopher and his team before heading out. While in the streets of Chinatown, Danni, Jasmine Jhordyn and myself decided to have a photoshoot (check out my favorites here).

We split up, with Jasmine and I heading back to fifth ave to recharge at the hotel before later on meeting up with Danni & Jhordyn after they came from the Prada party. While at the hotel I ended up falling asleep while typing my write ups and woke up to several missed calls (everyone thought I was flaking on coming out) Getting up, I quickly before preparing for another endless night.

NYFW SS19: DAY 02 by GINGRCO

DSC00963.jpg

NYFW DAY 02

My day starts at 8:30AM with me heading over to Dunkin Donuts to get some orange juice and two bottles of water, while I waited for the bus. I had spent Thursday night in New Brunswick at my aunt’s and would be here until tomorrow morning. The bus ride from New Brunswick to Manhattan was only about an hour and maybe fifteen minutes.

While standing outside of the bus station, I found out that I had bought a bus pass (while I was home in Maryland) to depart from the a different location in New Brunswick and not at the location I was currently standing at. However, the drivers were kind enough to honor my ticket and put me on the 9:05 bus to Manhattan.

On me I carried, the Sony A7riii (I swear i’m in love with this rental) with a 70-200M F/4 OSS G Master Lens (also rented) , my 50M F/1.8 OSS Sony Lens, and a monopod (also rented). I had brought the monopod and 70-200M with the intention of using them as I worked as media for the Style Fashion Week Shows tonight (you can read my opinion on Style Fashion Week here). But an thirty minutes into the bus ride, I found out I would be covering the Michael Costello on behalf of Allyn Lewis, author at The Gem so I didn’t really need the monopod. I did however, end up using the 70-200M a lot for street style work and throughout the day.

#OOTD

Today I wore a yellow mustard turtleneck underneath a grey based checker pant suit, paired with navy faux leather crocodile patterned Chelsea boots, with a pair of long gold studded ball earrings with hoops, clear frames, and S shaped letter necklace.

When I got into the city I ended up meeting up with Sakiyna and her friends, Drea , Chay and San . We attended the SAKS It List House & Kate Spade Presentation, before heading to get lunch at BLK SQ Pizza. I ended up not eating because the traffic began to get heavy and I wanted to get a good seat at the Michael Costello show.

While outside of Spring Studios, I had fun taking some street style photography and even ended up getting stopped by two of TRESemmé’s photographers for photos after the Costello show.

I ended up slipping out of my boots into a pair of emerald green bow slips, by A New Day, for more comfort. It’s about 7PM, and I was heading back to BLK SQ Pizza to finally get some food. The restaurant was so relaxing, the staff was very pleasant and the service was amazing! (FIVE STARS I’M COMING BACK!!)

After sitting down and eating my first meal of the day, I decided to skip my last show in Times Square and instead began to transfer the files between the camera and my phone. I ended up heading back to New Brunswick around 10pm and stayed up until a little past 1AM editing photos, and updating my IG Highlights before turning off my phone to go to sleep.

NYFW SS19: Style Fashion Week DAY 01 by GINGRCO

Thursday morning I decided to head to New York City a day early just to get situated, trade in some camera equipment at B&H Photo and then pick up my media presses for Style Fashion Week (a company I will now personally avoid at all costs).

This season I had the opportunity to rent the Sony A7riii from lensrentals.com , and I didn’t even think twice to pick up my Nex-3 the entire weekend. Which I tested out with Sakiyna outside of The Manhattan Center Thursday afternoon!

My Experience with Style Fashion Week

Arriving an hour early with the idea in mind to secure good riser seats, me and several other members of media stood outside of The Manhattan Center. It was roughly 105 degrees around 1:50pm on Thursday as we waited with no instructions besides, “No one is allowed the building!” and “Get off the steps!” from security.

Forming a line, I looked around asking the people near me “Do you know if this is the line for media?” one boy shrugged, before telling me he was just waiting on a friend who was inside. I turned to another photographer and repeated my question.

“Do you know if this is the line for the media?”

"Sorry hun, I’m trying to figure out the same thing.” She smiled at me and I thanked her before regaining my place in line.

I stood quietly with my luggage. I wasn’t planning on attending any of the Style Fashion Week shows today. I was only here to pick up my media passes before going about my business.

Other media members began trickling in. Everyone was very pleasant, smiling as they pulled at their phones to verify that they were in the right location. We, all those who had been waiting, began to explain to the new media members what was going on.

“Maybe that’s the line over there then?” one photographer asked pointing to a large line that had formed by the other entrance to the building. The individuals were standing in the sun, wearing only black and only had papers in their hands.

“I was told that’s the line for volunteers.” another replied.

I gripped my luggage just in case I’d have to run over to the other side to get a spot in the already lengthy line. About fifteen minutes had began to pass, and after making serval attempts to politely get the security's attention I gave up and listened to the crowd complain.

“This is ridiculous!” one media personalle yelled as she fanned herself with an paper. “Why won’t you let us in?!” another exclaimed. The media line of ten had now grown to about twenty-five and was crowding the doors of The Manhattan Center.

By this point, the security guard had locked the doors to prevent anyone from walking in or out, and was completely ignoring our questions. I guess you could say he was doing his “job”.

Models stood in confusion trying to figure out where to be directed to. A younger model, who looked as if she was in middle school, timidly knocked on the glass “Excuse me! We are walking in the show,” she said as she tapped the glass. She walked back over to her friends who were standing nearby when she got no response.

A tall man in a blue shirt was making rounds outside of the building collecting the models to take them inside through the back. The girls scurried off to follow him.

Assistants angrily knocked on the glass yelling “My bags are inside!” Several stating that they had been inside since 10am and now can no longer get in.

A photographer pressed his way to the front boastfully claiming that he had “already been inside” . I explained to him how they weren’t anyone in, and asked if I could see his media press to know if I was in the right area at this point. The photographer stated that he “couldn’t help” me with any questions because he “had already obtained his tickets prior to today.” As I proceeded to pull up my media credentials on my phone, he walked past and went to open up the locked door.

“No one is allowed in the building until further notice!” the security guard stated without even letting him speak. The photographer attempted to give a long winded explanation on how he was already inside and the security guard repeated the “no entry” statement right back to him.

The crowd of twenty-five has now grown even larger. Photographers paced around in frustration, while others talked about their excitement for the remainder of this week. One photographer began videoing taping the while her partner walked the premises taking photos.

“The 4pm show is canceled.” a boy in line told me showing us the official Style Fashion Week instagram account. People asked to see his phone in disbelief. We had lined up at 2pm since the doors opened at 3pm for the 4pm show that is now canceled for a 5pm. And still no response from the inside.

Suddenly a man approached the door to give one of the assistants her bag. “Sir can you tell us whats going on?!” someone yelled. The man took his time to explain to us the cancelation of the 4pm show, and stated “that no one would be granted entry until 3pm. “ It was around 2:30pm when he said this, and although I was grateful for the clarity I was completely over getting these passes.

After standing for another 15 minutes, the back of the line started to quickly brush pass me and the other photographers. “He said media come this way!” One photographer yelled as he ran past. I glanced and saw the man who was originally taking the models backstage now leading the media line around the building.

Lugging my items I quickened my pace to keep up. Walking behind the crowd of photographers, “What kind of equipment did you bring?!” one photographer laughed as she saw my suitcase. I smiled, “ I just got into town. I’m not doing any shows today.”

“Oh! You had me worried,” she exhaled. “I was thinking maybe I didn’t bring enough equipment.”

We reached the back of The Manhattan Center and some pushed their way to get into the doors. “Easy now, everyone will get in!” an employee yelled.

We past through backstage and ended up in the front entrance of the building. The greeters were beyond nice, greeting us with bright cheery smiles and moved quickly to help all of us get situated. The greeter who helped me, (whose name I unfortunately didn’t get) took her time to review my credentials and allowed me to pick up my passes for both myself and my friends who were traveling from out of country.

I hung around the hall for about fifteen minutes to just recharge in the air conditioning before exiting the building, where I ended up running into Sakiyna.

I had only registered for the Style Fashion Week tickets to see the Matte Brand Runway Show Friday night but ended up getting tickets to go the Michael Costello show (read here). I later on found out that Matte Brand’s Show was delayed until 8pm and that the media wasn’t allowed in the building until 6:45pm; even though the doors were originally suppose to open at 3pm with the show starting at 5pm.

When I had the opportunity to talk to another media member who had attended the Friday Night Show, she informed me that her and her group had the same entry issues that I experienced on Thursday.

She said, “The security was very rude to us. They told us things like ‘Y’all should just go home’ and ‘This is the ugly side’ simply because we weren’t in VIP or influencers. We waited patiently and really wanted to cover the show, but their comments were just ignorant and not needed.” She further explained that, her and her group eventually were granted access to watch the show only after waiting outside for two hours. She also informed me that people remained in line with the hope of being granted entry up until ten o’clock.

Overall, my experience trying to obtain my credentials was more than enough for me to not want to be apart of any future Style Fashion Week events.

With the heavy unexpected rains this season, shooting was difficult and, I had to reschedule many shoots. However, there was I had the loving opportunity to collaborate with Jennifer Avina, an L.A based blogger whom was also in the city for NYFW.

Meeting in an Lyft (which I highly recommend you use), Jen and I exchanged information and planned to regroup later in the week.

Early Monday morning, I headed up to Sixth Avenue to the Kimpton Eventi for our shoot. Jennifer was in New York not only for fashion week but to complete the finale piece of her new online consultation agency called Renson Social .

I had the opportunity to attend the Helen Anthony FW18 Collection. Before the show started, I walked around the room with Samantha of Samantha Leibowitz, looking for a good seat. Avoiding the second row at all costs, because we actually wanted to see the show and not the back of someone’s head, we settled into the third row.

As the venue filled up I went to snap some photos of HuesOfMan, in his all pink suit only to get stopped by photographers for a photo-op. Sadly, I forgot to get their information so I only have our instagram photo.

Naeem Anthony, British designer, debuted his first unisex clothing line to during NYFW. Typically only creating menswear, Anthony’s garments blurred the idea of gender norms while providing an edgy alternative gothic feel.

The models wore their hair in wavy curls, crimped hair styles, afros, short cuts, and locs. One model was even sporting an up do similar to a mullet. But the messy hair only added to the collection. The collection was anything from light and airy but more so mysterious and adventurous. Bright whites, silvers, vibrant reds, with dull browns and greens layered garments played with gold crosses, oversized paisley prints and shiny jewelry provided by Atelier Jen.

The collection embodied it’s name “Motions of Strength”. Anthony’s message is to bring humans together, which he incorporates into his collection by blending eastern and western fabrics, and cultures within his pieces.

I am excited to see where Naeem Anthony will lead his brand to next. Only being in the game for three years, He certainly is leaving his mark.

NYFW FW18: Vivi Zubedi Runway by GINGRCO

Sakiyna and I stood under our umbrellas outside of Industria. It had been raining all #NYFW and it didn’t look like it was going to let up anytime soon. As we entered the building, there was a strong sense of women empowerment which I felt from many of the women. Something I’m sure Vivi Zubedi would wanted all of us to feel.

NYFW.com reports that Zubedi has it is her mission to “support other entrepreneurs especially women entrepreneurs in South Kalimantan.” As she “intends to promote original fabrics from South Kalimantan (Pagatan Tenun/Woven and Sasirangan) to the international market.”

Something that was rather evident on the runway, as the Indonesian designer effortlessly blended her home traditional wear with mainstream fashion. These traditional designs that which are being preserved by the women of Kalimantan, are now for the world to see, with the help of Zubedi.

Pearl embellishments cover velvet garments that brightly shine down the runway. As the models struck the ground in simultaneously with every electronic beat, they took their time for us to see Zubedi’s work. Some of their eyes covered by the shadows casted from the hats, that read "Banua Borneo" . Other’s face fully illuminated by the bright lights, as their hair remained concealed under beautiful hijabs.

I was actually saddened when the show ended, but happy that I got to witness Zubedi’s work in person. And although I am not Indonesian , I am still very proud of Zubedi’s efforts to preserve her native traditions whilst simultaneously giving back to the women of Kalimantan communities.

SS18 Collaborations by GINGRCO

Thanks to Style Collective (SC), I was able to meet some amazing ladies, or as we say, "sisters" and network while enjoying the fashion spirit throughout New York City. I had the lovely pleasure of shooting with two of my SC Sisters, Rachel & Marissa.

After the Dan Liu show, we explored the rooms within Skylight Clarkson, before taking the streets. Aiming to get the perfect post-shows shots, we found a beautiful cobblestone neighborhood nearing Tribeca.

Below are just a few of our shots.

Enjoy!

With Love & Style

Rachel started With Love And Style to inspire and connect with others who share her passions for style, beauty, travel and living well.

Quartz & Leisure

Marissa of Quartz & Leisure, is here to simply showcase her own personal style while hoping to inspire others to be creative with fashion.

NYFW SS18: Dan Liu Runway by GINGRCO

It’s 9:52am and I’m somewhere between West Village and SoHo standing in line staring at the words “SKYLIGHT CLARKSON SQ”. Skin soaking up the sun, my eyes drift from the sky to take in the surrounding energy.

NYFW SS18'.png

Photographers spread out in the streets to capture the looks that inspire them, while fashion week drivers try to navigate through these same roads.

The line is slowly moving forward and I see Rachel approaching me with a smile.  We catch up as we begin to near the ticket booth. In bold white lettering the words, “Dan Liu 10:00AM GALLERY 3” are displayed in a bright pink background on the monitors ahead of us.

“You can sit anywhere you see room, as long as it’s not the front row,” the woman told me as Rachel headed to her seat. I thanked her, seeing as my ticket said, “SEAT: PENDING.”

As the crowd began filling up Gallery 3, I settled in my area and exhale. The sounds of seagulls and waves crashing echoed a feeling of calmness throughout the gallery. An energy I’m sure Dan Liu wanted.

The Chinese-Japanese Canadian fashion designer, showcased his 2018 Spring/Summer collection with the world on Sunday, September 10th, 2017 at Skylar Clarkson SQ during NYFW. Liu titled this collection, “The Lonely Beach Feeling” and from pastels, to rich reds, whipped whites, and deep blues, Liu filled the room with elegant cocktail dresses.

But before fashion, Dan Liu originally went to school for Computer Science and Psychology.  Ultimately disliking the career he chose to satisfy his parents, Liu went back to Japan to study fashion. However, I can’t help but think that Liu’s educational background plays a major part in the execution of this show.

Liu’s musical selection begins with the sounds of a Spanish guitar by DJ Maretimo’s “Blue Guitars of Picasso (Lonely Beach Cut)” as the lights began to dim. Soon a house bass booms throughout the gallery as the lights turn on, and Russian producer, Quardo Rossi’s “Silent Sea” guides the first model to the runway.

“It’s in the back of my mind to have the logical thinking,” Liu tells to CCTV America’s Michelle Makori. Continuing to say that when he designs, “the dresses should be practical” and “good for the clients, customers, and people who follow and love [his work].”  While studying in Japan, Liu adopted the Asian Philosophy of being simply and unique. Something that was definitely evident to me, throughout the show.

Before the show, Liu had an opportunity to speak with Fashion Mingle's Jessica Marshall.  "You put one of my cocktail dress, everything is already there.” And that he “loves crochet, embroidering, and lace.”

However, what stood out to me the most, were the peacock feathers accented on the faces of each model. Some placed, on their eyebrows, while others had single feathers centered on their foreheads. A look, that goes much further than just being a playful way of adding emphasis to his designs. But, I believed this truly drove home the idea of Liu’s lonely beach feeling.

When you imagine the beach regardless of the weather, the waves never subside. Their enteral movement of drifting forward, than drawling backwards is a constant resurrection themselves with every current. And although, peacock feathers represent many things such as pure souls, compassion and even kindness, they also represent immortality and resurrection.

Liu ends his show with his last model elegantly carrying a Japanese dream catcher outlined with in peacock feathers. An unforgettable look, that was followed by the song “Heaven” by Japanese songstress Ayumi Hamasak. Hamasaki’s soothing voice covers the crowd, as she sings the story of a lost lover whom she’ll never forget but will always live on inside of her.

The show is over now, and the lights have come on. Everyone is cheering and clapping, some even whistling and I make my way thru the crowd to find Rachel.

We began walking down Washington Street, further into SoHo for our shoot. While, strolling through the city, she says, “I really liked how I could relate to a lot of the pieces. I saw a lot of things I would definitely wear.”

Although, this has only been Dan Liu’s fourth season partnering with IMG-NY, I strongly believe that Liu definitely will to continue to make a lasting impact on the fashion industry for many years to come.
